I found my answer at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, thanks to a gentleman carrying a pair of shiny wooden shoes with
turned-up toes.
Unable to contain his enthusiasm for Dion, he approached the stage during her show A New Day, which is installed at the
Colosseum of Caesars Palace for a three-year, 600-performance run. Security guards were all over him in a flash, quickly
ushering him back to his seat, his prized Dutch clogs clutched in his hands. Céline looked sympathetically in his direction,
saying, "It's all right, it's all right."
But it didn't end there.
A few minutes later, before making her exit, Dion suddenly descended from the stage and made her way to her admirer.
She kissed him on both cheeks, exchanged a few words, accepted his gift, returned to the stage and waved the shoes
high for all to see.
The queen of Las Vegas had just pulled a Princess Di before our very eyes. The cheers were deafening.
Snarl away, you snide ones who find Ms. Dion too kitschy for your rarified tastes. Céline has it all, including the
admiration of millions, money to burn, a beautiful child, a loyal extended family and a husband who clearly worships
the ground she walks on.
In the October issue of Vanity Fair, writer A.A. Gill trashes Las Vegas in general and Dion in particular, risking the
wrath of all Quebecers by attacking her "ungodly French-Canadian glottal accent" and describing her stage presence
as "a weird hybrid of Pinocchio and Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Talk about bitchy, with a capital B.
Why do so many people hate Céline Dion?
While preparing for my first meeting with the world's top-selling female vocalist, I decided not to bring up Vanity Fair.
She had already dealt with her critics in an ABC television interview a few days before, saying that she never reads
reviews, deplores the fact that rock 'n' roll "snobs" who despise ballads are sent to her shows.
And she gets angry to think that all her fans who gobble up her albums and buy tickets to her shows are being portrayed
as stupid fools. So there.
Given that I'd only been allotted a few minutes between 8 p.m and her 8:30 show, after several weeks of negotiations,
I planned to tread carefully. At this point, I wasn't even sure whether I was going to be talking to Dion or her husband,
René Angélil, or both of them together.
Freelance photographer Amy Beth Bennett and I are told to meet with Patrick Angélil (son of René) at the Colosseum
box office. Talia DiMartino from the CD (Céline Dion) Productions office in Las Vegas joins us there. To go in, we have
to pass through a security checkpoint with metal detectors, just like at an airport.
DiMartino leads us backstage, past the offices and the costume shop. At last we arrive chez Dion, a house-within-a-theatre
designed as a replica of her actual home located 20 minutes outside Las Vegas.
We are placed in the dining room. Giant white mums in square glass vases adorn a long black table surrounded by
high-backed chairs covered in beige pseudo-suede. To the right, by the phone, there are pale pink roses. Behind us, two
candles flicker solemnly. We wait. "She can make anyone feel comfortable," Talia assures, explaining that Dion likes to
arrive at the theatre about 4 or 5 p.m. on performance days and usually has supper with her husband there before the
show. Yes, René is there every night. And he usually stays to watch the show. Their 2 1/2-year-old son, René-Charles,
sometimes joins them. Some of Dion's family members work backstage, too, DiMartino says: "She's very, very
family-oriented."
At last the diva arrives, with a cheerful smile, wearing something flimsy and flowered. Her makeup is thick, her hair short,
blond, spiky and laden with hair spray. At a loss for a compliment, I avoid the hair topic, opting to inquire about her
career, her charitable works, her health. A rumour has been circulating about hernia problems. But how to inquire avec
délicatesse?
We are told we have five minutes. "That's the story of my life," Céline says, slipping into a chair. "Five minutes, two
minutes."
Is she still convinced that she did the right thing by giving up touring in favour of a three-year sit-down in Las Vegas?
"Definitely," she replies. "People ask me if it's what I expected and, actually, it's much better than that. Touring was
magnificent for me because I've had the privilege of seeing so many things and travelling the world. But at the same time,
every time I went some place, to Paris, to the Riviera, everywhere, I didn't go as a tourist or as a visitor. I was going to
those countries to work. So when I had time off, I rested, in a hotel room."
Now, however, other things are more important. Like stability. Like doing the best show possible.
"The show that I have right now," she says, "it would not be possible for me to tour with it. It's too grandiose,
it's technically
impossible to move with it. So it's given me the chance to have, for my fans, an incredible show. But I can't travel the
world. So they travel to me. I went to their places, they invited me to their homes. Now I invite them to my home.
Knowing that I give my fans the best show and also knowing that I give stability to my son, honestly, I think we have an
amazing life right now. We have the best of both worlds. We love Las Vegas."
But the Angélils live far enough away from the city to have peace and quiet. "We live at Lake Las Vegas," she says. "In
our backyard, we have the best view, of beautiful mountains. The weather is magnificent. My son has a home. Mommy
can sing. We (she and René) play golf. We swim every day."
Living well, as they say, is the best revenge. "And my husband loves to gamble," she adds.
She doesn't? "No."
Never? "I shop." :-D
Someday, she may find time to keep René company at the gaming tables. But for now, "Mondays and Tuesdays, we have
family days," she says. "We play golf together and we go with the baby anywhere - it can be to see aquariums, it can be in
a petshop, it can be for an ice cream, it doesn't matter. We go to the beach. We have a beautiful beach two minutes from
where we live. Honestly, it's amazing."
Pause. Then, out of the blue, "He doesn't come shopping with me. So I don't gamble with him."
Sounds logical to me.
About those charities? I mention seeing her picture in an ad for a cystic fibrosis campaign in a recent People magazine.
Her niece died of the disease, at 16.
"I'm trying to do as much as I can for cystic fibrosis," she says. "And many more causes. Actually, we do give a lot of
money. I have a foundation, the Céline Dion Foundation. We give lots of money to different charities, oriented more for
children. I think it's a responsibility. We do as much as we can. I wish we could do more."
Besides the charities, her priorities include her parents and other members of her extended family, and her A New Day
show family as well as René and son René-Charles.
This means spreading herself very thin, very efficiently. "I'm trying to separate my time as well as I can. I wish sometimes
we could have more than 24 hours a day."
When she took a month off recently, she recorded a new album, in French. "I don't waste time," she says. "Oh, no!" The
album is going to be launched within a couple of weeks. She'll be promoting it when she takes another break from A
New Day, between Oct. 5 and Oct. 22. (Gloria Estefan will be stepping into her slot this time at the Colosseum - with
her own show. But Elton John will be doing most of her fill-in dates over the next couple of years.)
This will be Dion's first French album since S'il suffisait d'aimer, recorded in 1998.
Is she in good health? "I'm knocking on wood. I take one show at a time. Since I've paid less attention to my vocal cords,
the better it's going. My vocal cords used to be the leader of my life. I'm in charge now. Now I'm the leader. Now I say,
you follow. My priority is not singing. My priority is to be as good a mother as possible. I want to be a good mom, a
good wife, a happy human being. And if I'm happy and I have all that, I can sing much better."
I move on to the show. We're well past the 10-minute mark now and I'm starting to worry about curtain time. I'd heard
that major, expensive changes had been made since the show opened to some rather scathing reviews last March.
"It evolved a little bit," she says, "and it will still evolve. We might change songs. At one point, we have an album out, people
will like that song - we'll try to play it up, to try to work that song into the show."
What about her "Peter Pan" flying scene? "I don't fly anymore. I had to have surgery," she says. "I had a hernia. I had to
have surgery about eight weeks ago, something like that. It was taken care of."
This is too easy.
No more flying Céline? "Well, so far, they say no more flying. But maybe in a few months it will change," she says. "I have
no idea. I think that the hernia, it's not a sure thing that it comes from the flying. It can come from coughing, from having the
baby, it can come from exercising. Nobody said that it comes from the flying. But they said to me, 'You have to have this
surgery. It's a simple thing now, we don't want it to be a bad thing. We have time, we're taking care of it. You come back,
you do the show, but we don't want you to fly. We want you to heal well.' "
Now two dancers fly in her place. But she hates being grounded. "I had a great time flying - I loved doing it."
Now, it's almost 8:30 p.m. and I make the move, telling her I'm anxious to see her perform live for the first time. I thank her
for the interview. She thanks me for interviewing her. My Céline immunity has dissolved completely. I'm astounded that one
of the most heavily guarded women in the world is so completely unguarded, chatting about her family and her operation, as
if I were her hairdresser.
It's my turn to confess - that I don't like some of her songs because they make me cry. (A sucker for the maudlin is born
every minute.) She says people who are able to cry are blessed, and disappears into her dressing room. During the show,
I remain dry-eyed, even through her Titanic tear-jerker, My Heart Will Go On. It's her one French song, about l'amour,
staged beautifully with the English translation written as a love letter on the mega-screen behind her, that sets off the
waterworks. Lovely as Dion sounds in English, her voice is pure silk en français.
My critical faculties soon return, however, telling me that Franco Dragone's overwhelming high-tech staging and Céline's
songs seldom hit the right poetic mix.
Too often, dancers intervene just when you want to hear her singing alone in the spotlight. Bodies and objects are
constantly soaring. Because the stage is so wide, the dancers - and Céline - do a lot of running. Her energy seems
boundless, her costume changes are few. She's an exceptionally generous performer who spends as much time as
possible close to her fans.
It's only on my way out of the Colosseum that I remember the question I had neglected to ask.
Luckily, a couple of nights later, at the opening gala of the Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity, I run into René Angélil.
Who chooses Céline's songs? I want to know.
Yes, he participates in the shaping of the show. "Of course, I'm her biggest fan," Angélil says. "And I try to put myself in the
public's shoes. So I make a lot of suggestions about which songs she should sing."
Her albums are another matter. "For her albums, the songs are presented to the executive producer and myself," he says.
"We choose maybe 100 songs that we present to Céline." After that, it's up to her. "She decides which ones are going to
make the record and which ones won't. She's the artist. She has to feel the songs."
I mention that the Céline I had met a couple of nights before was, to my surprise, a very assertive, mature woman.
(As if he hadn't noticed.)
"That's the way she is," he replies. "People tend to think of her as this 16- or 17- year-old girl that they knew.
She's 35 years old. So, like any woman ... she's very strong. She's a very, very strong character.
And to be able to do what she does and be where she is today, she has to be strong. She's not only a great voice."
Now for René, the dad. I ask if their son talks yet. "Yeah, of course, he talks. He says a few words. He's 21/2 years old."
What does he say? "Everything. In his own way. We have to understand him. Only we can understand him."
Viva Las Vegas. The town where you're nobody until you have an impersonator and eager fans defy security guards to
present you with shiny Dutch shoes with turned-up toes. But can playing to 4,000 well-heeled tourists five nights a week
really compare with the thrill of playing to tens of thousands in stadiums from Paris to Tokyo? Only Céline knows.

artists and my shows (in Las Vegas) are all sold-out.
If they (her critics) say my albums and my shows are bad... it gets me angry, because it means that all
those people who buy my albums or who come to see my shows are stupid."

"I am not anorexic. I know that there are many problems of anorexia in the show business... when people
usually see a thin-person, they think he/she is anorexic at once. I am cherished. Every-night when I undress,
in front of the mirror, I say myself: 'I cannot believe that I had a baby and that I appear still fine.'
I eat whatever I want. I do not have a particular diet."
At the end of interview, lasted about 15 minutes, Céline reveals that she suffered to not have been able to write as well as it would
have liked it. "I believe that I write better in English than in French. The French language is very difficult. I do not
regret anything, because I still believe today that the school is not for everyone. School isn't easy,
I had difficulty on integrating myself. I wasn't beautiful, I had problems with my teeth, I were very thin.
At school, someone pushed me and I didn't defend myself. People thought that I wasn't normal.
I did not speak, I was a dreamer. I wanted to stay home.
I always day-dreamt. I did not learn so much well."- Céline confided at the end.

"I gargle every day with warm water with salt, baking soda and Carob syrup, and some
honey always works."
It helps, too, she said, that she is a homebody. "I never really go out."
Sunday night was one of those rare occasions when she was out past midnight. She made it clear
to all that she is loving life in Las Vegas and "the show of my life."
"Everybody thought," she told the crowd of 450, "and they still think of us as all
crazy for doing such a thing, moving all of us to Las Vegas."
She thanked her stage family of 350 "for making me look so good." Then, as the deejay
cranked up AC/DC's "Thunderstruck," the sound-check song she adopted for more than
300 tour stops, she did a most un-headliner-like
thing. Sharing the moment, she welcomed her show mates to join her in revelry on an
awning-covered dance floor. Surrounded
by colleagues and their families, she sang, danced with all-comers, embraced fans and
friends and posed for pictures for
15 minutes.

Céline will take part in the fourth annual "Women Rock!" benefit for breast cancer research alongside Anastacia,

Kodak Theater and aired on Oct. 23 on the Lifetime cable channel.
This year's event is themed "Songs From the Movies," and will feature the performers' takes on theme songs from

Yesterday, September 7, 2003 Celine had a private party for her 100th show. A friend
of mine from the Colosseum gave me my pass to get in, but he was not able to attend. The
party was held at the Garden of the Gods, next to the pool. There was food every where, it
went from one side of the stage to the other. The things that really stood out were the
chocolate covered strawberries, which were made to look like a mans tuxedo. The
cocktail bar was entirely made of ice and inside of the ice were red letters that said, “A
New Day.” Where the drinks were poured it had a dip were the liquid went into, and
spiraled into your cup icy cold. Celine had a cake that was about 2ft by 3ft, it said “A
New Day 100th Show.” I grabbed a couple of finger foods and tried to find a seat close to
the stage/dance floor.
I was sitting at a table alone and felt very acquired because I couldn’t find anyone
I knew. A few minutes later Patrick Angelil came walking by, I went up to him and told
him that I was by myself and if he could help me out and he told me that I could find a
seat in the VIP section. It worked out I found the lighting crew and they were nice to me. I
got to talk to them for a little while and then Celine walked in, I left them and said I
would be back in three minutes, but it was more like an hour.
This party was great
because everyone was calm nobody really rushed or pushed to see Celine. Celine stepped
onto the dance floor and opened with a speech. It was about being excited about her first
100 sold out shows for A New Day and the efforts that went into the show. She ended it
with, “Let’s get this party started !!”
I was the third person that joined her on the dance
floor and started to dance with her. She is so cute she really likes to dance and we all
surrounded her. Everyone was dancing with her and she was singing along with the
music, making goofy faces, and taking pictures with people who asked. I took some
pictures with Celine, danced with her, and gave her a kiss on the cheek. I got some
lipstick on her face, so when I saw it I rubbed it off, she doesn’t mind at all when I touch
her most people I think would have looked to see what I was doing, but she kept dancing.
Her dancers from the show are great to watch in their free dancing with Celine and she
can keep up with everyone. Celine danced to about 3 or 4 songs, she danced to oldies but
I do know one of the songs “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Celine even did the guitar
move she did on Divas Las Vegas.
Celine was challenged by a young tall girl. She was doing a move something like
what Elvis used to do. The girl was making her legs quiver and of course this girl
couldn’t handle it and she ended up with a side pain she told Celine. Through all of that
dancing and the outdoor heat, Celine never broke out in a sweat.
Cake Time! It was time for Celine to cut the cake and everyone gathered around. She cut a piece for someone I didn’t pay attention, but I’m sure it was for Rene and then she had the second piece. She said she had to try it to make sure it was good, she gave the OK and everyone got a piece. I followed Celine from beginning to end and she was cool about it and so were her bodyguards. She greeted everyone and gave little interviews here and there, people came up to her and congratulated her.
Celine looked great her hair style is very cute, now that it is growing out. She was
wearing a green dress, with rhinestones on both sides of her shoulders and a beige closed
toe shoe. The show started at 10:30 and ended at 2:00 Celine was there from 11:25-12:20.
I did find out that Celine will be taking RC to Lego Land when she takes her next break.
Before Celine was able to leave I got to talk some business with her and Rene, they have
my phone number. Rene said he would be sure he talks with the right people and he will
get back to me, so hopefully it all goes well. Wish me luck! I will keep you guys posted
and pictures will come out hopefully later on today because when I got back home all the
hour photo shops were closed.

P.S. I took a personal souvenir home from Celine. After Celine was done taking two bites
out of her cake she left it on a table. I came back a half an hour later and it was still
there!!! I mustered up the courage to grab it, I didn’t think it would be rude because
Celine was gone. I took it back to my table, but it was a good thing I had grabbed my own
piece of cake before I took Celine’s. A man came up to me and said, “A friend of mine
wants that cake back, I’m sorry to be a d^@k about it but she is with me and she wants it
back.” He was very rude and mean about it and made me take it back to her table. He
turned his head to gossip with one of the camera lighting guys I was talking to and that’s
when I swoped the cake. I have Celine’s dish, cake, and spoon with Celine’s pink lipstick
on it. If some devine power didn’t want me to have, it wouldn’t have worked out the way
it did right?

Last night Céline celebrated her 100th show at Caesars Palace with an after-show party with 350 cast and crew
members and a 60-pound (amost 30 Kg) chocolate mousse sheet cake in the Garden of the Gods area.
The 100 shows, all sellouts, represent the half-way mark of the first year of her three-year deal.
ABC's "Primetime Monday" was on hand to film the milestone for its one-hour show, which airs Sept 15.

Now the World's Happiest Mayor and one of the world's best known singers collaborate on a television ad aimed
at raising the $300,000 needed for the Red Cross' Las Vegas.
Las Vegas Mayor, Oscar Goodman, and Céline filmed the spot last night at the Colosseum at Caesars
Palace, where Dion performs.
The advertisement, which is expected to begin airing today, will publicize Las Vegas' "30 Days of Giving" campaign to
encourage donations to the victims of last month's floods in the northwest valley.
"We have some great, great Las Vegas entertainers who have been here a long time ... Celine is the star of today,"
Goodman said. "I hope we go way over the $300,000 mark. If we don't it will be a great disappointment."
Donations to the Red Cross can be made at any Wells Fargo branch to account number 3418307090. Indicate on the memo
line of the check that it's intended for Las Vegas flood relief.

I have got to feel it first and then I let it go and hopefully people will feel something. When people come up to me and say we got married with this one or I loved somebody or this song has been helping me so much, then I stop for a second and I'm like "Well I guess its worth it for me to keep doing what I'm doing".

Céline translates: "She wanted to know, I have been doing it for many years
and she is just getting started and obviously every time you are about to
start a show you are very nervous. What do you do to try to calm down to try
to relax ?
Celine's answer "I still feel nervous before every show. When I am nervous
though my mouth gets very dry. This is very frustrating, but this is not bad
at all. This is very normal. The discipline is very important, but to do
anything, everything to please. No, you have to keep your own personality.
Its hard in the beginning, its very hard, but if they accept you they are
going to help you to make the second step. Cause they will play you an TV
and if they think you are a cool guy, they are going to say that this kid is
so kind we are going to play his record. So Be kind, be generous, be smart
but remain who you are. Work hard but have a good time. The best is yet to
come. This is the worst right now, but if you go through, saliva will come
just like that. I really admire what you are doing now because showing the
world what you've got is really tough.
Billy Klippert asks "Do you get tired of signing autographs?"
Celine answers "You can't ask people to buy your records and say "Heh leave
me alone". It's a package deal. It's a good deal"
