::: Concert Review: Dion belts out hits with cool swagger :::

(6:40 p.m. GMT) Celine Dion is a bit of a goofball. That is part of her charm. And she charmed a sold-out crowd of more than 19,000 at the Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit) Friday, during her first Detroit concert in a decade.

Dion has the powerful voice of a diva and the cocky swagger of a prizefighter, and she put exclamation points on her performances Friday by excitedly pumping her fists by her side, playing a few licks of air guitar and belting "yeah!" just out of reach of her microphone.

She's the type to tear through a schmaltzy ballad one moment and then roll her eyes and fan herself off with her hand the next, as if to make sure she never takes herself too seriously. When she's not performing for thousands of adoring fans, she seems like she might be a pretty cool chick to hang out with and watch the game at a sports bar.

Dion opened the show, which ran just under two hours and spanned two dozen songs, with her version of "I Drove All Night," which was used in a series of Chrysler ads when she was the company's spokesperson earlier this decade. (Her last Detroit appearance, in fact, was when she performed at the Charity Preview of the North American International Auto Show in 2003.)

In the time since, Dion held a five-year residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, and she brought a bit of her Vegas act with her to the Palace. As such, there was a feeling of over-rehearsed familiarity to Dion's performance, and the proceedings felt too clinical at times. Even when she brought the house down with "All by Myself," which peaked with Dion hitting the song's crescendo alone at the center of the stage -- all by herself, as it were -- the moment felt a bit canned, right down to the standing ovation she knew she'd receive from the crowd.

And though she fancies herself a jack of all trades, maneuvering between adult contemporary ballads and flamenco-inspired Spanish guitar numbers, the segue into Queen's "We Will Rock You" felt oddly out of place.

Dion's massive stage, positioned at the center of the arena, was a labyrinth of trap doors, hydraulic risers, panels that illuminated from below and moving conveyor belts. It was always morphing and transforming, and it's a wonder it didn't at any point swallow Dion, her seven-piece band, her three backup singers or any of her dancers whole.

Dion went through several costume changes during the show, first appearing in a slinky lavender minidress and later in dress accented by a flowing white cape that almost looked like a parachute. She moved around the large stage with verve and gave all sides of the crowd equal play.

The show closed, of course, with "My Heart Will Go On," Dion's mega love theme from "Titanic." As images from the box office hit were projected onto large video screens, Dion -- her stage illuminated with candles -- waltzed across the stage in an elegant black gown.

She exited the stage through the crowd, again evoking the image of a prizefighter. And while the show wasn't quite a knockout blow for Dion, she definitely retained her belt as the champion of big, bold ballads and will live to fight another day.

::: Concert Review: Celine Dion proves age isn't a factor :::

(7:45 a.m. GMT) Singing to a sold out house at Nassau Coliseum this past Thursday, it was clear that Celine Dion has not lost her thunder. At age 40, she still sings, dances and entertains with the best of 'em while still forever maintaining the aura of diva.

The only unfortunate part of Dion's "Taking Chances" tour was her opening act. Gordie Brown, an entertainer hailing from Las Vegas, was a disappointment to a much-hyped-up crowd. He was cheesy, his jokes were overdone and his level of performance was so far below that of Dion that it completely killed the enthusiasm of the audience.

Any excitement that was lost in the opening act however was gained back and then exceeded upon Dion's grand entrance. Once she took the stage, the Coliseum exploded with applause and screaming from an audience that ranged between nine to 90-year-olds. The show opened with her popular song "I Drove All Night" and the energy was infectious from that point on.

Highlights of the show were without a doubt the old favorites. Dion's performance of "Because You Loved Me" brought most of the crowd to tears. It was incredibly moving because she has such passion in her voice and truly commits to the song. "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" received the best response from the crowd, proving to be the favorite Dion ballad.

The most remarkable thing about the whole concert was the high caliber of entertainment. You would never have known that Dion has sung these songs and done this same choreography hundreds of times. Even after such a long accomplished career she still performs with the same enthusiasm and heart as if it were her first time. The great level of modesty she expressed several times throughout the evening compliments these traits even more.

The show was incredibly involved with at least six costume changes, several of which that included shoes that even the most graceful 20-something would topple over in. As a whole, the aesthetic of the show was flashy and youthful but also very creative. The back-up dancers were extremely talented and really worked the whole stage to their advantage, always complementing Dion without overpowering her.

The grand finale of the show was a performance of "My Heart Will Go On," the theme song from "Titanic." A lighting technique was used to give the illusion of the stage being candle-lit. Dion sang the song dramatically dressed in black from head to toe. A song that is typically overplayed on radio and television was given new life when heard live.

If nothing else, the Celine Dion "Taking Chances" tour proves that she's still got it. She is looking and performing better than ever and is able to maintain an attitude of humbleness that is so rare.

::: Celine @ The Rachel Ray Show :::

::: Concert Review: Everything is big, energized, to a fault :::

(2:00 p.m. GMT) No one could accuse Celine Dion of skimping on anything in her show, except perhaps the amount of fabric in her dresses. Everything about last night's sold-out show at Value City Arena in Columbus (Ohio) was big: the set, the production, her voice, her gestures and her facial expressions, all of which were magnified on giant video screens.

Dion clearly has her act down to a science, and she moved through it without a glitch, keeping up an energetic pace for two hours and frequently punctuating both songs and her French Canadian-accented chatter with exuberant shadow-boxing moves.

Looking extremely fit, and wearing the highest of heels, she filled the arena with sound as she moved briskly and confidently along a series of conveyor belts, up ramps and stairs, and to the top of a piano on a stage set in the middle of the arena.

At the center of Dion's act, and maybe at the center of her success, is one big contradiction: She specializes in songs of vulnerability and heartache, but with her oversize voice and personality and evident confidence, she comes across as being about as vulnerable as a Mack truck.
Her confidence, and the soaring beauty of her voice, no matter how often used, give the audience the chance to revel in the sentiment of heartbreak without risking real pain.

When Dion sang the bluesy It's a Man's World, she did so from the top of what looked like a glittering wedding cake, with four male dancers far below her, leaving no doubt that the song's sentiments didn't apply to her. When she took on All by Myself, any whiff of despair was washed out by her vocal pyrotechnics.

Dion aimed for a wide range of music but fell into the range of the merely goofy with numbers such as We Will Rock You. She was at her best in songs that used her unstoppable energy, such as the show-opening I Drove All Night.

A cover of Queen's The Show Must Go On even temporarily resolved the contradictions in Dion's performance: For a few minutes, she both exulted in her power over the audience and held her image up to question.

::: Concert review: Celine Dion electrifies Boardwalk Hall :::

(8:20 a.m. GMT) After a decade away, Celine Dion returned to Atlantic City last night, belting out past hits, covers and new songs for 14,000 people crammed into Boardwalk Hall. It was Dion's first performance in the resort since April 1998. She was scheduled to give three shows at Caesars in 1999, but they were postponed - and never rescheduled - after her manager-husband Rene Angelil underwent skin cancer surgery. The French Canadian took a career hiatus from 2000 to 2002, and followed that with her Las Vegas show, "A New Day," from 2003 to December 2007. With her "A New Day" turned to yesterday, Dion returned to Atlantic City.

The stop is part of her five-continent tour, "Taking Chances," which coincides with next month's release of her greatest-hits album, "My Love: Essential Collection." Tension grew by 8:45 p.m. Audience members started clapping prematurely. Spotlights shone down. Then the arena fell dark, and video screens on the stage played Celine's "I Drove All Night." When the screens rose, there stood one of the most successful female artists of all time.

After opening with "I Drove All Night" and "The Power of Love," Dion paused to address the crowd. She spoke about how this tour is more family-driven for her, with her 81-year-old mother and 7-year-old son traveling beside her. Then she said how much she missed Atlantic City. "I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be back in Atlantic City," she said. "It's been way too long, so tonight we're going to make up for lost time."

Dion pranced along a set of inclines and conveyer belts in a mid-thigh lavender dress and high heels, merengueing and cha-cha-ing as if the stage were a ballroom floor. She was lithe, energizing, sexy. She serenaded a violinist on "To Love You More" and shared a seductive pose with one of her dancers during "Eyes On Me." After the song, she fanned herself with her hand. Time to cool off.

And she did that with her next song, "All By Myself," one of those great vocal-driven love tracks that remind fans why she has sold 175 million albums worldwide, why she's recognized as one of the most talented vocalists of this or any generation. Dion's Vegas days showed during the 'soul' section of her concert. In "It's a Man's World," she sang from a circular glitter stage, and on "Love Can Move Mountains," she playfully danced through a clutter of her dancers and instrumentalists.

In her first encore, "River Deep Mountain High," she twirled a microphone stand like it was a baton, shimmering in a silver and gold dress as if she were auditioning for "America's Got Talent." And she does have talent. Runway models don't go through as many wardrobe changes as she does. Dion has more poses and stances than an Elvis impersonator - the point, the stare, the nod, "Saturday Night Fever," air guitar, arms stretched in the "Titanic" pose. It was only fitting that she would close the show with the theme from that film, "My Heart Will Go On," her most famous ballad of all.

For that song she was decked in a floor-length, single-strap black gown, surrounded by four beds of candles. What a way to say goodbye after all these years. The night belonged to Celine, back for the first time in a decade, bringing along the voice that could shatter glass, the voice that could make a mythological Siren jealous.

::: Charice sings with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden :::

(7:00 a.m. GMT) Last week Celine announced at The Oprah Winfrey Show that the young singer Charice would have duetted with her at the Madison Square Garden on the notes of Because you Loved me. The video of the duet will be showed on September 19, 2008 during the episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Here's a transcript of what happened during the concert - Celine Dion: "They actually told me about an incredible young singer that she [Oprah Winfrey] discovered awhile back. You know, if you watch Oprah last week, you know all about her. This young lady's name is Charice. I'm so excited. She's 16 years old and she's from the Philippines.

"Let me tell you, she has a voice that can literally blow the roof of Madison Square Garden and she just might. But the real story is how Charice and her mom escape the terrifying experience and had to leave Charice's violent father. "You know, to start a life of their own. Charice vowed to save her mom from life of desperation and despair. You know, through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered every singing contest in her native country and eventually noticed by such influential people.

"Oprah wanted to take her and took her under her wings. Then, the David Foster joined her. I had the chance to see Charice perform one of my songs on Oprah last week. I have a little bit of difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice, and I'm so emotional... So I'm searching and looking for my words...trying to control my emotion.

"I invited her to come here tonight to sing with me. Where are you sweetheart? There she is, come down, Sweetie. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Charice. [To Charice] You look spectacular! Are you shaking? Are you okay? Don't be nervous and, I think, a lot of people, they understand that you are nervous.

"I'm gonna tell you one thing, the talent we're not gonna talk about, because you have. The strength, we're not gonna talk about because you have, and so the love. And I have to tell you, the family, we'll gonna talk because you have to. "One time, my manager, my husband [Rene Angelil], told me, ‘Celine...' Because when I started to sing, I was 12 years old, so 12 and 16, it's the same, okay? He told me, ‘Celine, I know you're nervous, don't be scared. You love to sing. When you go up there, you'll be nervous. Don't be.'

"I will give you an image that you can think about. Think that all the people you see in front of you are your brothers and sisters. You're singing in your living room and these are your family. They can't can't wait to hear you sing. I think I know you want to dedicate this song to your mother. So we're gonna sing ‘Because You Loved Me' for your mother."

After the performance - Celine: "Your mother is extremely proud of you, and so we are as well. You did amazing and the roof of Madison went up tonight. But I'll ask you Charice, when you do Madison Garden, are you gonna invite me? I love you and I cannot wait for you to perform here for a full concert,"

::: Celine Dion's 9,825-square-foot Jupiter Island home about 80 percent done :::

click here click here (8:20 a.m. GMT) By the time pop star Celine Dion completes her six-continent "Taking Chances" tour in Montreal's freezing February weather, she might be ready for a warmer climate. If so, the 40-year-old diva's estate here could be ready and waiting for her. Dion's Canadian firm, Renlec Management, filed paperwork last May to begin building on a 3.7-acre oceanfront property in the 200 block of South Beach Road, and Jupiter Island Building Official Jeff Newell said the $3.2 million in new construction is now about 80 percent complete. Last week, the property was buzzing as usual with construction trucks and workers. The main structures were erected, but the landscaping was not complete and the buildings were surrounded by dirt.

It is difficult to estimate when the home will be in ready for Dion to move in, but the family anticipates it could take at least another year, said Conrad Damon, Dion's Florida attorney. Renlec bought the property in June 2005 for $12.5 million. At the time, the land contained a two-story home, two-story guesthouse and a pool, but all the structures were leveled for Dion's estate. West Palm Beach Architect Roger P. Janssen's plans for the new estate reveal tropical-themed architecture with wide verandas and balconies, cupolas atop copper roofs, French doors and white Bahama shutters.

When complete, the estate will feature two guesthouses, an underground garage, two pools, two tennis courts, a pool cabana and a beach cabana containing a small gym. The main residence, a 9,825 square foot two-story structure, has six bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, an elevator and a basement for laundry and staff living quarters.

Damon said Dion and her manager-husband Rene Angelil designed the estate to create an island, "Bahamas-like" atmosphere for relaxing and raising their family. The couple have one child, 7-year-old son Rene-Charles. "The goal and concept for this home is that it's going to be a comfortable, family home," Damon said. "It will have a laid back feel to it."

The entrance for the estate will be at an adjacent 2-acre lot to the north that Renlec purchased in January for $7 million. The driveway will feed off to a future 2,621-square-foot guesthouse, tennis court and underground garage on that property before curving south to an entry pavilion and parking spaces on the larger lot. Just inside an 8-foot-tall cypress fence sits an additional eight-bedroom guesthouse.

Damon said a "spectacular" swimming pool will one day grace the middle portion of the property and showcase unique, children-friendly features. The main residence, on the far east portion of the property, is shaped as a three-pronged cross centered around an octagonal-shaped middle area. On the first floor, the octagon includes a living room facing the ocean and separates north and south wings containing bedrooms and a sound-proof TV room.

On the second floor, an elevator and staircase lead into a playroom and children's rooms on the west side and an octagonal-shaped adjacent master suite on the east side. While the suite includes an outdoor spa, wide balconies and three fireplaces, perhaps its most impressive feature is a 460-square-foot master closet that rivals the sleeping area.

In addition to the main home's center, the estate's entry pavilion and beach cabana are octagons. Damon calls the octagonal concept, "a significant component of the design" for Dion, who wanted an open-space feel to her home. "I'm sure they'll be good neighbors," he said.

::: Concert Review: Celine Dion kicks off the first of five area gigs :::

(8:00 p.m. GMT) There are certain moves a singer can use to sell a song. Dropping to a knee. Pumping a fist. climbing on top of a grand piano. Celine Dion used all these tricks, and many others, throughout her lively, aggressively entertaining Wednesday night concert at the Prudential Center in Newark.

The show was the first of her five area gigs this month, and also her first New Jersey appearance since 1999. And it proved that she hasn't changed a bit over the course of the decade. Dion, who took a break from performing from 2000 to 2002, and has spent most of her time in Las Vegas since then, still has one of the most powerful voices in the business, and still sings corny songs about the power of love with the fervor of a true believer.

This show, presented "in the round," ran with military precision. There were 10 musicians and eight dancers, and the entire show had a lot of motion. Parts of the stage, as well as the video screens, moved up and down. On the upbeat songs, Dion and her supporting cast pranced around the edge of the stage; occasionally they also ventured out, on ramps, to two mini-stages.

As high-tech as the show was, Dion kept it down-to-earth by chatting amiably between songs, and exchanging goofy looks with her musicians. There were dance beats on songs like "I Drove All Night" and "I'm Alive," and plenty of power ballads, such as "My Love" (the most effective of the six songs Don drew from her 2007 "Taking Chances" album) and "All By Myself." She dueted with a pre-taped Andrea Bocelli on "The Prayer," and with her backing vocalist Barnev Valsaint on "I'm Your Angel" (R. Kelly handled the male part on the original recording).

After saying she could never do a show without singing a song in French, the Quebec native sang her biggest French-language hit, "Pour Que Tu M'amies Encore." She indulged her taste for bombast with a heart-pumping cover of Queen's "We Will Rock You" (followed by another Queen song, "The Show Must Go On") and a faithfully frenetic cover of the Ike and Tina Turner classic, "River Deep - Mountain High." Predictably, "My Heart Will Go On" - her smash hit from the "Titanic" movie - was the final, heart-tugging encore, with clips from the movie projected on the screen, and scores of candles adding atmosphere.

Like all pop divas do, Dion left the stage at several points to change costumes. But the interludes were reasonably entertaining in their own right. One was an expertly delivered sequence of flamenco music and dance, another an imaginative mashup of R&B standards like "Soul Man," "Lady Marmalade" and "Respect."

::: Celine sings Obama's praises :::

(10:00 a.m. GMT) When Celine Dion's Taking Chances world tour blew through Washington on Monday, the pop diva's husband and manager, Rene Angelil, took advantage of the political buzz to announce they would like to see Democrat Barack Obama in the White House.

"We think that at the international level, Barack Obama would project a better image of the United States," Angelil said. "John McCain is a good man, but it seems to me that America would be better represented by Barack Obama. It also seems we'd have a better chance of maintaining the peace with Barack Obama."

Even with homes in Florida and Vegas and a five-year stint performing at Caesar's Palace, neither Dion nor Angelill are voting for president. "We're Canadian," stated Angelil.

click here (7:00 a.m. GMT) "After her performance, Charice learns she has a fan who's been waiting to speak with her via satellite. She's a working mom with a 7-year-old who also loves to sing. She also happens to be one of Charice's idols—Celine Dion!

Celine says watching Charice sing left her speechless. "I can tell you that we have lots of things in common. I was very shy too. And I also had a mother—still have a mother—who is my strength," Celine says. "You have more talent than most people. You can sing. You can speak and sing with your heart. You can play guitar. You can draw. And you can have dreams."

Because Charice shares so much of her talent with others, Celine wants to give Charice something in return. "I'm going to be singing at Madison Square Garden, and I would love to ask you to come and sing a duet with me," she says. "Maybe we can sing 'Because You Loved Me,' and maybe we can dedicate this song to your mother."

Now it's Charice who's left speechless! "Thank you, idol," she says. Tune in Friday, September 19, to see Charice sing with Celine, who's currently on the road with her Taking Chances tour. Celine's visiting every major city in North America through February 15, 2009."

::: Santana keen to collaborate with Miss Dion :::

(8:00 a.m. ET) What can Céline Dion possibly have in common with prog-metal freakout band Mars Volta and avant-garde jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders? How does the queen of safe, adult contemporary soft pop, the great diva of the mainstream, even wind up on the same page as such far-out experimentalists?

Because, when asked who he dreams of collaborating with in the future, those were the first of many names rock guitar legend Carlos Santana rattled off in a recent interview. Santana, 61, is entirely serious about his love of Dion. "I'd like to do something with Céline," he says. "It's just (a matter) of finding the right song where, when you hear the first note, your hair stands up and you get goose bumps and you start crying even though you don't know why."
