THREE Best Of Las Vegas Awards For Celine!

(11:00 a.m. GMT) "You figure Celine Dion reads the paper? She's not here. Don't tell her and she will never know," Las Vegas comedian Rita Rudner instructed the crowd at the 26th Best of Las Vegas Awards show, accepting the Best All-Around Performer award on behalf of the Canadian diva. "What Rita said," Clint Holmes said while accepting a second award for Dion, for Best Singer. Turns out Dion was way ahead of them: The Caesars Palace star had prerecorded an acceptance speech for both awards. "A New Day..." won the "Best Show Choreography" Award.

It's the 4th year in a row that Celine wins the Best Singer Award. The Saturday afternoon show at Treasure Island's "Mystere" theater was the seventh such benefit tied to the annual poll of readers, published as a special section inside today's Review Journal. An audience of 1,074 bought tickets to benefit the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, the new theater complex to be built downtown. The audience not only got the advance scoop on most of the winners, but also learned Cirque du Soleil has contributed $1 million to the performing arts center project.

Sun to set on Celine Dion's "A New Day"

(8:00 p.m. GMT) Franco Dragone finds it strange that a show he created -- "Celine Dion: A New Day..." at Caesars Palace -- will end on December 15th. "It's very rare that a show closes at the top in Las Vegas," said Dragone, who was behind the success of Cirque Du Soleil's "O" and "Mystere" (both still playing in Sin City), as well as "Le Reve" at the Wynn. Even two of his other Cirque shows -- "Quidam" and "Alegria" -- have life on the road. But "A New Day...," the spectacle that showcases the pop diva whose voice is forever identified with the megahit "Titanic," will not go on.

But while Dion's contract is up just before Christmas, Dragone isn't planning to go out with a whimper, and what you see now is different from when the show opened four years ago this month. Then, "New Day" was such an extravaganza that even megastar Dion seemed to fade into the background -- merely providing music to the ever-changing visuals. The show was filled with eye-popping theatrics that took their inspiration from surrealist Rene Magritte and the Hollywood musicals of the 1950s. "When we opened, Celine was a little bit lost," said Dragone, "but slowly she took over the show." Over four years, as with his other shows, "A New Day" has evolved, Dragone said. "We had such vocabulary that we created in a workshop before the show opened that when we needed to add a new song or dance we went -- shall I say -- to our bank ... because we knew Celine would not want to sing the same thing."

Recently, said Dragone -- who is also planning a revamp of "Le Reve" -- more new songs have been added to "Day," including a tribute to Frank Sinatra and the song "River Deep, Mountain High." "Of course, as you can imagine it's not easy to change this type of show because it's so huge," he said. "One little change and you have to change big things." Dion is always involved in the changes, Dragone added, but she's most involved in the costumes: "She loves costumes. For the rest, changes come from everybody, including the dancers. She's part of the team like everybody." Changes are also in store for the Colosseum, a 4,100-seat, $90-million-plus arena Caesars built for Dion.

John Meglan, president and CEO of Concerts West, which is part of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, notes that Dion dates fill about 20 weeks at the Colosseum, and the show has "totally exceeded our expectations," never dropping below 90 percent capacity. "Everybody has won in this situation," he said of the partnership between Caesars and Concerts West -- and, of course, Dion. "I think the show is really tight. Making the changes is really refreshing -- not only for the audience but for the cast and the crew and Celine. We get a lot of repeat business." So whoever follows Dion will have to fill some pretty big shoes -- and a lot of seats.

Right now Elton John does 10 weeks at the arena and Jerry Seinfeld does three weekends. "We will continue to operate the Colosseum, and we're in the process of bringing in some new shows and new artists, but we're not ready to announce anything," said Meglan, noting that they've previously brought in other acts such as Stevie Nicks, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Pavarotti and a comedy festival. As for Dragone, he feels the end coming but doesn't want that to affect the show. "We're stopping at the top of this ride," he said, "but I want it to be the craziest year."

From "Las Vegas Magazine": That Voice: Dion makes final year fabulous

click here (7:10 a.m. GMT) It’s begun: The beginning of the end. Leading up to her final shows in December of this year, the show that will undoubtedly go down in Las Vegas history—Celine Dion in A New Day ... —has begun its slow, graceful exit from the lights of Las Vegas. Since March 25, 2003, the show has continually offered spectacle in a way not seen before in the city that’s seen everything. Naturally, the core of the show begins and ends with “that voice.” If you didn’t have that, it wouldn’t have been possible to sustain the momentum lo these many years. Beyond her God-given talent, Dion also has that uncanny ability to connect, both with her audience as well as with her fellow performers. She has a warmth onstage that cannot be fabricated. It comes from within, and it shines whenever she has a spontaneous exchange with an audience member, or in her rapport with the many dancers and musicians who share her stage.

For anyone who visits the Colosseum at Caesars Palace the first time, the overwhelming shock is in the sheer size and spectacle of the show. During the pre-show, a camera operator has fun with the audience as he (or she) zooms onto one person, or even just the glass of champagne they’re holding, and then the image is magnified many-times over and projected onto the astonishingly clear 110-foot-wide LED screen. This behemoth, installed at a cost of more than US $6 million and deemed the largest of its kind in North America, makes all the difference in A New Day ... The range and variety of images that the show’s designer, Michel Crête, has been able to produce make this show a visual thrill from beginning to end. Of course, the genius behind all of this has to be the director, Franco Dragone. After studying theater and being a street performer, Dragone began working with Cirque du Soleil in 1983, where he stayed for more than a decade, perfecting his craft and his skill as one of the greatest showmen in history. His talents have never been put to better use than with Dion.

And then ... the show beings, and the waif-like Dion descends the massive staircase to begin her performance. In seamless fashion, each production number flows into the next. Your favorites can all be heard, most in English with a soupçon of French thrown in. Any of them can take your breath away, perhaps none more so than “The Power of Love,” a clever “duet” with Frank Sinatra, and then that other song you might be familiar with ... something from Titanic, about going on forever ...

Alas! If only Celine Dion could go on forever in Las Vegas.
