Dion's superfan takes the cake

Celine Dion prepares to enjoy champagne and cake backstage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with fan Ramona Almirez, who took in Dion s A New Day ... for the 100th time. Superfan Ramona Almirez is dreading Celine Dion's departure. For four-plus years, Almirez has been flying from San Jose, Calif., to Las Vegas almost every week to see Dion perform "A New Day ..." at Caesars Palace. "It's my passion," she said. It's also a big chunk of her retirement nest egg, she said, with her front-row seats at The Colosseum going for US$ 225 each. Add airfare, tickets for friends, food and the home she bought at Lake Las Vegas, not far from Dion's, and the cost of pursuing her passion is steep. "Let's not talk about that," said Almirez, a Johnson & Johnson executive.

She surpassed 100 shows during a visit a week ago. "I'll be in severe depression when she leaves" in December, she said. Almirez plans to continue following Dion to her concerts when she heads out on a one-year tour. She's already got tickets to Dion's May 24-25 concert in Paris next year. Dion welcomed Almirez backstage for champagne and cake to mark the 100th show.

Celine Dion to build new US$ 3.2 million home on Jupiter Island

(2:00 p.m. GMT) Singing sensation Celine Dion has begun work on a US$ 3.2 million home on Jupiter Island (Florida - U.S.A.), officials confirmed Wednesday. The 9,800-square-foot home at 215 South Beach Road will replace a slightly smaller home on the 3.7 acre site, said Jeff Newell, town building official. Dion and her husband, Rene Angelli, bought the property from F. Morgan and Barabra Taylor for US$ 12.5 million in 2005. The sale was made under the name of their Canadian firm, Renlec Enterprises, Inc.

"They have already torn down the old home and are preparing the ground," Newell said. "They have had all the permit for a few months and have met all our land development regulations." Newell said the home will have six bedrooms, 40 windows on the beachside and will be shaped like a cross. Other features will include an underground garage for four vehicles, a wine cellar and an office. There will also be a US$ 1.1 million guest house with four suites, a US$ 600,000 beach cabana, parking for 14 vehicles and two Olympic-size swimming pools.

"The underground parking garage is not unique," Newell said. "The last three or four homes we have approved have underground garages. You can do it if you are building on a dune that stands 21 feet above sea level." Dion, 39, told reporters as early as 2005, that she liked the area because of the quality of the schools in which her 6-year-old son Rene Charles would be educated. She also made the news this week, when her song "You and I" was selected as the theme song for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

The singing star's decision to sell her and her husband's home in Jupiter and move to Jupiter Island is bringing more publicity to a community that has historically tried to avoid the limelight. Dion is not the only celebrity to select the island as a home, but following golfer Tiger Woods' decision last year to buy a home on the island, the community has received a lot of attention. Residents -- there are now about 700 -- managed that by controlling who would be allowed to buy on the island. In the early days, purchase of land was contingent upon acceptance of a member to the Jupiter Island Club. A person might buy land on the island, but would not find a friendly community.

Celine And RC's Playground

click here (6:00 p.m. GMT) In an interview with the Canadian newspaper The Gazette, Neil Matthews, owner of MeubleA playground supplies, talked about Celine Dion. "So how much do you charge for installation? You can add on anywhere from $200 to $650 for installation, depending what you've got. It rarely takes more than a day. Although we recently built one for Celine Dion and it took 21/2 days to install. Did you meet her? I didn't get to meet her, but my crew did. They said she came out and introduced herself, that she was very nice. So, what kind of a playground does Rene-Charles have? Some of her relatives came to the showroom with a list of activities they wanted to be able to do on their playground. They wanted rock climbing, a tire swing, a fire pole and two slides. Celine specified two slides so she could slide down at the same time as her boy. That's so cute. It's not just Celine who can customize; I encourage people to think of what they want to do on their playgrounds. Hers also has a really loud bell on the top of the playhouse. I don't have one in the showroom - it's really loud."

The 2007 Forbes Celebrity 100

(6:05 a.m. GMT) "The 2007 Forbes Celebrity 100" just come out on the web. Celine Dion ranks at #20 on the general chart, earning US$ 45 million. She ranks #6 on the Best Paid Musicians chart behind Madonna, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Jay-Z and Bon Jovi. Pay Rank: #15, Web Rank: #20, Press Rank: #59, TV/Radio Rank: #65. She is the lone Canadian on the list -- not including actress Sandra Oh, who made the list as part of the Grey's Anatomy cast at No. 12.

This is a chart based not only on the celebrities' earning within the last 12 months. Rankings are generated by combining earnings with other metrics: Web mentions on Google press clips compiled by LexisNexis; TV/radio mentions by Factiva; and number of times a celebrity's face appeared on the cover of 32 major consumer magazines. Last year Celine ranked at #24 on the general chart and at #7 on the Best Paid Musicians chart. It's the sixth year that the Quebec-born diva -- whose Las Vegas show will end later this year -- has made the list. Her highest ranking was in 1999 when she hit the top 10 for the first and only time at No. 9.

"Celine fans have six more months to shell out up to US$ 350 apiece for tickets to her blockbuster Las Vegas show, 'A New Day...,' at Caesar's Palace. The Canadian songbird has been selling out the 4,100-seat Coliseum — a US$ 95 million custom-made venue—since 2003, and last year pulled in US$ 78 million. The show's extended run ends Dec. 15. Not to worry: Her new album from Sony drops in October".

Celine in Vancouver!

(9:00 a.m.GMT) Pop diva Celine Dion made a surprise appearance earlier this week in Vancouver (Canada) at an international airline conference with 700 delegates. Her repertoire included Fever, You Are So Beautiful and What a Wonderful World. In total, Ms. Dion belted out a six-song set, capped by You and I, which was Air Canada's theme song in the fall of 2004 (with the refrain, "You and I were meant to fly").

During her final song, large screens showed a video of an Air Canada plane soaring over downtown Vancouver. And, of course, it was a Boeing aircraft, because the evening was co-sponsored by Boeing and Air Canada. Boeing's manufacturing archrival, Airbus, had numerous executives in the audience at the dinner organized by the International Air Transport Association.
