!!! Celine Dion and Elton John Raise $2.1 million !!!

"You're helping to rebuild the homes and lives of so many people in need," Dion told an audience at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Some of the people in attendance had paid as much as $1,000 for tickets. "It's a big night for me, and a big night for the people in Mississippi," John told the crowd, promising, "If we need to do another one of these, we'll do another one again next year."

For the most part, the two-hour show played like condensed versions of the stars' separate showcases, complete with the giant-screen conceptual videos both Dion and John use on regular nights. After Céline Dion introduced "Sorry," a song she said she used to cover in her early concert days, the stage lights went up to reveal John accompanying her on his red Steinway grand. When the song was over, he offered the French-Canadian singer an extended greeting in French, a language he learned in the early 1970s.

Afterward, he turned to the crowd and explained, "What I just said is, 'Can I have those shoes after she finishes?" LOL At the end, Dion came back out in blue jeans to join John and his band for "Saturday Night's Alright for Fightin'." But not before she told him, "By the way, my red boots are in your dressing room." LOL

"She can sing anything," Elton said of Celine. "She can sing the best ballad in the world. She can sing classical stuff and she can sing soul and rock and roll..."

"Everybody looked at this as a unique, once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind performance, in the spirit of raising money" for the employee relief fund, says Scott Schecter, the company's vice president of entertainment. Earlier in the week, tickets to the H.E.A.R.T. Benefit (Harrahs Entertainment Artists Rally Together) were still available at $300, $500 and $1,000. There is also a room-and-show promotion with two tickets for $900. Buying the best tickets for all three acts separately at the Colosseum would add up to a non-deductible $670.

Beyond that, Harrah's is taking a cue from Andre Agassi's annual charity benefit and wringing the most out of the Colosseum's 4,100 seats by offering corporate packages, with the $50,000 and $100,000 packages guaranteeing backstage face time with the stars. Céline Dion's emotional response to Katrina victims came out on a Larry King show in the wake of the New Orleans flooding. "I could see the rage inside of me as a mom, as a citizen, as a human being, and couldn't see the changes as fast as I wanted. I couldn't take the pain and couldn't take the images every night and every morning," she explained in September. "I just couldn't hold it anymore and I just exploded."

John's attitude was "What can I do to help my fellow employees?" according to Schecter. "He looks at himself as a Harrah's employee." Dion opened the Colosseum as its anchor tenant in March 2003 and performs "A New Day" about 150 times each year. Seinfeld followed that May with the first of more than a dozen appearances. John debuted in February 2004 and recently performed his 100th date there. The three finally coordinated their schedules for Monday, the night after John's current stint ends but before "A New Day" reopens. Seinfeld will fly in just for the event. A unique stage configuration will host both Dion and John's bands.

"It truly is a hybrid of what all three artists need. The production guys had to put their heads together here," Schecter says. "We were trying to get everybody comfortable. It was not one particular performer who was going to have the run of the place." Just how much the three will interact remains to be seen. "Both Elton and Celine have chosen specific songs for this show," Schecter says. "We're even hopeful we could see Celine and Elton get together on something and do a duet, which would be awesome. I hope that they will. That's in their hands."

2006 Juno Award Nominees

With the exception of Celine Dion challenging in the Fan Choice Award category (against Diana Krall Michael Bublé, Nickelback, Simple Plan) Canadian divas were absent from this year's Juno competition. With NO nominations for Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan, Nelly Furtado or Shania Twain, the field is open for emerging talent to seize the spotlight. This year's awards show in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to air live April 2 on the CTV network, will include performances by Bryan Adams, Coldplay, Buble and Nickelback.
